The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that the government in an effort to evacuate 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa, spent GH¢49.7m.
According to Hon. Ablakwa the government estimated GH¢33.7million for the evacuation exercise, but Ghana’s Business Mogul, Ibrahim Mahama through his company contributed GH¢16 million to the exercise.
Addressing the public in September, 2026 in Accra on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa, Mr. Ablakwa said the government is not retaliating against the South African government but is promoting peace and unity on the African continent.
He added that 4,972 Ghanaians were evacuated from different countries since 2025 through partnership with diplomatic partners.
He disclosed that 3,807 Ghanaians were repatriated from Libya, 244 from Cambodia, 246 from Nigeria, 444 from Côte d’Ivoire, 18 from Kuwait, two from Morocco, eight from Sierra Leon, one from Iraq, and five from Mauritius.
Mr. Ablakwa added that the evacuation of Ghanaians from different countries places a financial burden on the government.
He disclosed that the Ministry is planning to establish a consular fund which will be used as a resource to respond to such situations.
He added that this fund will ease the financial burden on the government while responding to evacuation exercises.
He urged Ghanaians to be vigilant about human trafficking and its consequences since lives and property can be lost.
