The application of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi seeking to defer the judgement of the Samreboi case has been thrown out by the Accra High Court.

In the court proceedings, the court described the application by Chairman Wontumi’s legal team as incompetent and moot. It dismissed it to allow Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay to continue with the judgement of the case.

Chairman Wontumi together with his legal team arrived earlier at the court while the court was preparing to give judgement on the case before legal jurisdiction.

Samuel Atta Akyea who is now the leading lawyer in Wontumi’s legal team filed the deferment on July, 16, 2026 praying to the court to extend the judgment for review of the case after taking over from the previous lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi.

Mr. Samuel argued before the court that the court’s judgment is vague and inconsistent under 14(1) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) under which his client was prosecuted.

He stated that the prosecution of his client was represented by lawyers of their choice throughout the trial and the change of counsel was represented by the court.

The court questioned the timing of Atta Akyea’s involvement in the case which was his appointment on June, 19, 2026 and he was sent a formal notice on June, 22, 2026.

The office of the Attorney dismissed the application and urged the court to proceed with the judgment of the case.
