The Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has made a statement regarding the growing concern over the legal vacation in the legal system.
According to him, the court could not completely suspend its work because of the legal vacation, even though judges and lawyers are on it.
Speaking during the courtesy call by the Mineral Income Investment Fund (MIIF), he said the legal vacation does not necessarily mean the court should halt all its activities when emergency cases emerge.
“Cases should not go on leave, emergency cases should be heard during the vacation period”, he said.
His comment comes amid the ongoing debate surrounding the legal vacation and issues emerging around it whether the activities of the court should be suspended.
Legal vacation has found its way into the Supreme Court after the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Honourable Oppong Nkrumah challenged the practice.
Chief Justice Bonnie has defended judges who sit on cases during the legal vacation explaining that some cases are time-sensitive and need to be attended to, to ensure peace.
He added that the justice system must remain responsive to critical issues within the court’s jurisdiction to ensure justice prevails during the legal vacation.
He emphasized that putting all court proceedings during the vacation period on hold could bring serious consequences for the cases that require immediate attention.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie assured the public that the judicial system remains committed to ensuring that emergency cases are being attended to during the vacation period.
