Dumsor ended: We have more than enough power to meet demand – ECG boss
The management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), with Ing. Julius Kpekpena as the Managing Director, has made a very positive assurance to Ghanaians concerning the ongoing power crisis facing the country.
According to Mr. Julius, the company now has more than sufficient power generation to meet the demand of the country, following the recent power outages.
Mr Julius, in an open discussion on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, 3rd May, 2026, explained that the load shedding issue was solved earlier than expected, even before the other two additional generators were fully installed and synchronized to the national grid.

“Yes, we have enough power to give consumers. We stopped load shedding on Wednesday before the last two generators were synchronized unto the grid. We have sufficient power to distribute”.
In continuation, he emphatically stated that the country is abreast with power to meet the about 4300 megawatts demand from the consumers.
“Right now, we have enough power to supply all our customers and our demand is about 4300 megawatts and all our customers are receiving power. Before the last two January test were synchronized, we had stopped load shedding, so it means that we have the last two capacity as buffer to supply our customers,” he added, emphasizing that the system is stable and capable of keeping the lights on nationwide.
Ign. Kpekpena expressed that the system upgrade to enhance the power stability caused the power sector disruptions we shortly experienced recently, pinpointing to the earlier distribution level challenges in some part of the country, together with the temporary gas supply issue, which caused the load shedding in April.

He also added that the recent fire action at the Akosombo Dam, played a significant role in the load shedding; but the situation is fully resolved.
“It is true that before Akosombo fire, we had issues and if you recall the Monday before the Thursday of the incident, we gave a press conference to address concern that were coming from certain pockets of the country”
“So, there were distribution level issues. Before that also, earlier in April, we had a problem with gas supply that caused us to shed load for a very brief period.
“The Akosombo issue has been addressed and the gas supply challenges have also been fixed”
Despite the improvement, the ECG boss admitted that isolated distribution challenges persist in certain areas. He thereby promised the people that the company is working tirelessly to resolve these pockets of difficulty to ensure consistent and reliable power supply.
The recent system upgrade is expected to put a complete ‘end’ to power outages, termed as ‘Dumsor’ in the country, and to bring relief to consumers and businesses who have faced power fluctuation in past weeks.
