The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has pledged to support the appeal of TikToker Camilla Alhassan, who was sentenced to one year in prison by the Accra High Court following her statement in a viral video against the President.

In a statement released by the NPP expressed shock over the prosecution of the TikToker, Camilla Alhassan, over comments she made about John Dramani Mahama.

The party has criticised the current government over the imprisonment of citizens over constitutional questions regarding freedom of speech as guaranteed under Act 21 of the Constitution.

“No amount of legal formalism can conceal the fact that a Ghanaian has today been deprived of her liberty in circumstances arising from her expression. This is not the hallmark of a confident democracy”, it was stated.

They further criticised the treatment given to Mrs Alhassan after she was arrested before the prosecution of the year term.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) expresses its desire to support Mrs Alhassan’s appeal which is yet to be presented before the court in the coming days.
